ASC International Cinematography Day at the Academy 2018
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences hosted a contingent of over 90 cinematographers from around the world as part of the ASC International Cinematography Summit taking place this week in Hollywood.
The day began with a welcome from Academy President and fellow Cinematographer John Bailey, ASC.
This was followed by a presentation and Filmmaker panel discussing “Real World Use of ACES” featuring European cinematographer Geoff Boyle, NSC, and US based cinematographer Andrew Shulkind, moderated by Annie Chang (ACES Chair and VP Creative Technologies, Universal Pictures).
Additional sessions featured the “Exposure Index Investigation” Project which is an offshoot of ACES work done with the major camera manufacturers by Joachim Zell, Steve Yedlin ASC and Josh Pines. This included visits to the Stella Stage with practical demonstrations by Joachim Zell and Alex Forsythe.
Finally, Josh Pines from Technicolor presented the color science and work done on the Academy’s efforts to create a new metric for evaluating solid state lighting, the Spectral Similarity Index (SSI).
